Far from being the bleak affair Trent
purported, The Downward Spiral is in fact
NIN‘s most accomplished release to date. Aided by a masterful production Trent Reznor
has adopted a wider palette of sounds resulting in dramatic tracks like Heresy and the industrial metal of March of the Pigs nestling beside the
sombre instrumental tones of A Warm Place. Whereas Broken had all its roughness pushed to
the surface The Downward Spiral benefits
from its intense undercurrents and complex arrangements. It‘s a harrowing
listen with little respite. Trent is every bit the misanthropist as
the accompanying rants off life and religion testify to. Yeah, there‘s a concept
herein but I’ll leave it for you to decipher. The Downward Spiral deserves to be heard in its entirety but specific
high points include Heresy, Closer
(check out the Coil, Meat Beat.. remixes) and the least NIN sounding track the
soft jazzy touch of Piggy. Other
parts of The Downward Spiral reminded
me of the Beatles, Bowie, Eno, Ministry and Prince and while that may sound
like regression, for NIN it‘s more than a step forward and quite an achievement
fir Trent Reznor. Really.
